Exhibiting the Values of H3

Grant Edwards

Deer Park Families,

At the beginning of every day, we end morning announcements with the saying, “Remember to Help Others, Help Your School, and Help Yourself.”  These words—which we refer to as H3—are not just something we say: they are the values that we attempt to live by each and every day, both inside and outside of our school building.

With that in mind, I wanted to share a story with you about one of our students exemplifying these values not just through words, but through action that I believe truly represents why we make H3 a part of our everyday routine.

A couple of weeks ago, I was returning the the Jr./Sr. High School from a meeting at the Howard Building when I noticed one of our students, junior Grant Edwards, sitting next to an older gentleman on the sidewalk. The man was clearly in a bit of distress, so I pulled over to make sure everyone was doing alright.

It was at that point that Grant informed me he was walking home from school and noticed that this man was on the ground and seemed to be choking. Grant, an Eagle Scout, jumped into action and assisted in helping the man dislodge the debris and sat with him to make sure he was alright.

About this time is when I drove by, and Grant helped me get the gentleman into my car, and I was able to get him home.

Actions, all too often, take a backseat in our society. It is very easy to say certain things, however acting on values is much more difficult. While I am extremely proud of Grant, I cannot say this comes as a surprise.

For much of his high school career, Grant has shined as a great example for our students. In fact, just this summer, he was featured in a story in which he built a “Little Library” to help toward the completion of his Eagle Scout ranking. You can read more about that story HERE.

We are certainly proud of Grant and all of our students who epitomize the spirit of H3. His story is a great reminder of our efforts to always, “Help others, help your school, and help yourself.”

Sincerely,

Shane Hartley

Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School Principal
