Deer Park Schools is filled with history, programs, and extracurricular activities that the average community member may not know about. “Deer Park: Did You Know?” will be a new feature we’ll be rolling out each week to tell the story of Deer Park. Each week, we’ll feature two different hidden gems of Deer Park. Welcome to, “Deer Park: Did You Know?”
Amity Elementary Veterans Day Program
Did you know that each November, Amity Elementary second graders host an annual event to honor local veterans?
The Veteran’s Day program began as a small event inside of a classroom, but has since evolved into one of the marquee events on the Deer Park calendar.
The 2nd grade class prepares for the event by learning about all the branches of the military, as well as what it means to be a veteran.
The program includes staples of the traditional Veterans Day program, including an explanation of the Missing Man Table—which honors fallen, missing or imprisoned military service member—and new traditions such as a rendition of America the Beautiful, performed in American Sign Language.
Deer Park is honored to host such a powerful event, and proud of our 2nd graders and teachers for the hard work put into the program each year. We are thankful to all the members of our armed forces, both domestic and abroad for all of their sacrifice in support of our country.
Last year, the program could not be held in person, but the 2nd-grade class worked diligently to make the event special for current and former servicemen and women. This year, the event will be back in person for the veterans.
