GREAT OAKS

Deer Park Schools is filled with history, programs, and extracurricular activities that the average community member may not know about. “Deer Park: Did You Know?” will be a new feature we’ll be rolling out each week to tell the story of Deer Park. Each week, we’ll feature two different hidden gems of Deer Park. Welcome to, “Deer Park: Did You Know?”

Great Oaks Partnership for Engineering

Did you know the Deer Park Engineering Career Academy has been designed to expose students to career based engineering experiences beginning as early as 7th grade. Deer Park Schools has partnered with the Great Oaks to offer Project Lead the Way’s engineering curriculum. Utilizing Project Lead the Way’s Gateway to Technology program, students at the middle school level take foundational engineering courses in Design and Modeling as well as Automation/Robotics.

At the high school level, Project Lead the Way introduces students to engineering design and principles of engineering. In the course, Introduction to Engineering Design (IED), students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3-D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.

The Principles of Engineering (POE) course exposes students to some of the major concepts that they will encounter in a postsecondary engineering course of study. Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of materials and structures, automation, and kinematics. Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation.
