Jr./Sr. High School

What's New?

A Message from the Administrators

Hello Deer Park Families! Happy Sunday!

Our Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School staff and students are off and running in our academic classroom and with our after school extra curricular events in December. Below are a few key information pieces as we work through the next two weeks.

First and foremost, the students’ last day before the Winter Holiday Break is Friday December 17th. Students will return to school on Tuesday January 4th.

Our grade 9-12 students will be taking 1st semester exams on December 14, 15, 16, and 17. Needless to say we will be focused on Teaching and Learning right through Friday, December 17th which once again will be students’ last day of school before the Winter Holiday Break. Listed below is the semester exam schedule your students' classroom teacher has reviewed with them.

Finally, students in grade 9-12 will be released early on Thursday Dec 16 and Friday December 17th, listed on the exam schedule below. There will be no noon lunch served on these two days, but a sack lunch will be provided.

Respectfully,

Bob and Mindy

Classroom Highlight

Teaching and Learning is priority 1 at DPHS every day. This week, I want to feature the Teaching and Learning taking place in Shannon Wilkerson's Government class.

Mrs. Wilkerson was beginning a unit on the judicial branch of government. What stood out to me right away was how engaged and interested the students were in this topic. The lesson observed was crafted from the Social Studies Standard #12 which states, “Laws and public policies are created and implemented by the three branches of government. Each functions with its own set of powers and responsibilities." Students learned how the decisions made by the judicial branch protect us or affect us.

Students looked at several Supreme Court cases that were first amendment cases involving rights in public schools. The first case was Morse v. Fredrick which was a relatively recent case. The students read an article about the case and discussed the outcome. The students then used a jigsaw reading technique which is a strategy the social studies department learned during training with the Miami University Writing Project.

This led to a class discussion whether the student agreed or disagreed with the decision. Finally, students had to produce a short writing response about which court case they agreed with most or least.

Thank you Mrs. Wilkerson for planning and delivering this high leverage Teaching and Learning experience for your students!
