What's New?
A Message from the Administrators
Hello DPHS Families!
Our Staff lifted off the New Year with a full week of quality academic teaching and learning in our classrooms. Mindy and I couldn't be more proud of our staff and students! The best is yet to come in this second semester.
One aspect of our instructional programming I want the highlight is the professional development Anne Berger is leading. Anne is our instructional coach from the educational service center. She is a trusted advisor to our teaching staff and her collaborative work with our teachers is ramping up the quality of the instruction taking place daily in our classrooms.
Teachers embody a lifestyle of lifelong learners and at Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School, the math teachers have the opportunity to continue their learning through embedded support from an instructional coach. The math department works closely with their instructional coach to explore and develop instruction that will meet the students needs and work together as a 7th grade through 12th grade team to provide students with a connected math experience through the years. With this model of support for our DPHS teachers, they are able to keep current with educational research and trends that in turn provide high quality instruction to ALL students at DPHS.
A special thank you to Anne for making a difference! In the meantime, as we head into the second semester our team will be working hard every day to ensure every student receives a best of class education when they apply themself and work hard in our classrooms. Mindy and I are here to serve you!
Have a great Sunday evening with your family! Life is good!

Classroom Highlight
This week I had the privilege to stop in Mr. Davison's classroom and observe the teaching and learning taking place there. This month in Mr.Davison's class, students are learning about chemical and physical changes that take place in the home environment in the kitchen.
Students began by practicing communication and survey collection skills by conducting a student and staff survey about a food they would like to learn to cook. Once collected, students compiled the data and built a bar graph to summarize and describe distribution. Students were then engaged in guided practice, with Mr. Davison modeling how to organize data and create a bar graph.
The new Viewsonic board (photographed below) allows interactivity for all students as they take turns creating their own graph, showing mastery of graph creation. With their completed graphs, students accomplished the lesson's learning target addressing Ohio Academic Content Standard 7.SP.#c, "I will create and use a bar graph to answer questions."
A future lesson in Mr. Davison's room will incorporate sequencing and direction following to cook the top vote receiving food choice. A "sweet" lesson may only be topped off by the winning choice, cupcakes! Thank you Mr. Davison for connecting learning to real world experiences for your students and also for making learning fun. I'll be back for the cupcakes!
