What's New?

A Message from the Administrators

Hello Deer Park High School Families! Happy Sunday!

As I reflect on the past week, I was impressed with the teamwork of our students, staff, and parents. When we work together as a team the sky's the limit of what we can accomplish.

I can say without reservation our academic classrooms are priority 1 and we were hitting on all academic cylinders this week! Mindy and I couldn't be more proud of our staff and students!

Your Sunday Wildcat Weekly will be your one stop shop for the key information you will need to navigate the many happenings at DPHS and our team will work hard to keep everyone well informed.

As always Mindy and I are here to serve you in our role as your Administrative Team. Please reach out to either of us if we can be of service. Also, feel free to contact me (Bob) on my direct cell line at 513-623-2901 if you would like a tour of our school while it is in session during the day. Mindy and I are proud of the business being conducted daily!

Have a great rest of the weekend with your family!

Bob and Mindy

Classroom Highlight

As always, our key focus during the academic day is the teaching and learning taking place in our classrooms. This week I want to highlight the teaching and learning taking place in Mr. Gabbard's mathematics class when I stopped in. As alway there are four key targets Mindy I look for in our DPHS classrooms. The first is a Clear Learning Goal communicated to the students so they know exactly what they will be learning. Students were bungee dropping action figures from various heights to gather data about how long the cord needed to be in order to get the closest to the ground without hitting it. They used this information to create a model to predict how long the cord should be to jump from a "mystery height" so the action figure would get as close to the ground as possible.

The Clear Learning Goal was for students to collect data and develop a linear and/or exponential model for making predictions and to test that model for accuracy through further experiments and refine that model until it best fits the data. The Ohio Standards the lesson was crafted from included: A.CED.2, F.IF.4, F.BF.1, and S.ID.6. The lesson was student directed and Mr. Gabbard served as a sounding board for questions. The students were challenged! A key of any quality lesson taught is for the instructor to check the students for understanding to ensure they mastered the standard taught. The success criterion for the lesson was students were evaluated by the accuracy of their models in regard to the final bungee jump. Their use of spreadsheets to organize their data and creating graphical data also was a key success criterion.

Hats off to Mr. Gabbard for creating this real world teaching and learning hands-on experience that challenged his students. I was impressed with the models the students delivered! Well done!
