Amity Elementary

What's New?

From the Desk of Mr. Drouhard

Dear Amity Families,

I repeatedly talk about how giving our community is to our staff and students. While our community supports us at Amity, it is also important that we give back in supporting the community! Two of our teachers, Melissa McNutt and Kristen King, helped organize an Amity Day of Service this past Friday. Preschool through 6th grade students partook in activities in their classroom that would make their surrounding community just a little bit better. They learned about the community members they would serve through a presentation, and then worked on activities that would give back to the organization.

Placemats, bookmarks, and birthday cards were made in our PreK-3rd grades. They will support our local senior living communities and local library. Our 4th-6th grade packaged and wrapped activities for A Kid Again, which provides experiences for kids who have life threatening illnesses.

While we greatly value teaching our students the traditional subject content of school, we also value teaching students that they are part of the community in which they live, and can give back in small ways that make it better!

Take Care,

Josh

P.S. Please make sure you check out the photo gallery of our Amity Day of Service below.

Amity STEAM and Fine Arts Night

Amity will be celebrating STEAM and Fine Arts night together on Thursday, April 7th. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. It is an educational philosophy that viewing and teaching these disciplines in combinations will lead to innovative thinkers and creators in life. The halls of Amity will be lined with student artwork for parents and students to immerse themselves in as they travel from classroom to classroom. Within our classrooms, we will have teachers leading our parents and students in science experiments and math games. Games and experiments will run from 6:00-7:00 p.m. that night. Our 5th grade will be performing at 7:00 p.m. in the gym to conclude the evening.

Grade Cards

Grade cards will be coming home in backpacks on Friday, March 18th.

Terrace Metrics Social/Emotional Strengths and Needs Survey

Deer Park Community School District is proud to provide an innovative assessment service to students and their families to guide our support of students’ social/emotional needs. This coming week, 6th grade students will be given the opportunity to complete a brief assessment that assesses social/emotional strengths and needs. This assessment, provided by Terrace Metrics, is given to students each fall and spring.

The results of the assessment are confidential; no teacher will have access to your child’s results. Only members of the school’s response team (e.g., counselors, school psychologists) will see student’s results, which are available immediately after the assessment is completed. This allows us to understand the strengths and needs of every student, including those who would benefit from additional strategies. If your child has endorsed high distress, a member of the school’s response team will contact you by phone to discuss next steps. One of these steps may include a “Clairity” assessment, provided by Clarigent Health. Clairity involves a private, ten-minute interview where the student is asked about their thoughts and feelings by a trained member of the response team. The interview is securely recorded and the speech patterns (rather than the answers themselves) are analyzed to assist the response team in determining the appropriate course of action for the student.

For more information or to opt your child out of this survey, please click here.

Kids Heart Challenge

Amity students and families,

I would like to say thank you for answering the call. At the start of February, all students in grades K-6 participated in the American Heart Association, Kids Heart Challenge, by continuing to learn of ways to keep their hearts healthy, spread awareness about heart disease and raise money for kids with special hearts. This year's fundraising goal was $5,000 and we were able to raise $5,768.73 for the American Heart Association.

Students who received donations were able to earn instant thank you gifts. If your child raised $15 or more, their larger thank you gifts will be received in about 4-weeks. Please stay tuned to find out who our top fundraisers were! Thank you to Mr. Satterfield for putting on this event!

Please Help Reduce Tardies To School

I recognize that as the school year rolls on, our ability to get our students up in the morning becomes harder. We need to renew our efforts in the morning to get our students up and out the door. School starts at 8:00, and our teachers are starting the educational process at that time daily. While it may not feel significant to be a couple minutes late, if done daily it will add up to a lot of educational minutes! Thank you for your help!

Champions Program At Amity

Champions offers before and after school programs at Amity Elementary to help working parents. Please see the attached flier for more information.

Recess During Cold Weather

With a return to colder temperatures, please remember to send your child to school with appropriate outdoor attire for recess. We will be going outside whenever the “feels like” temperature is 25 degrees or above. This gives our students time to burn some energy and allows for a time that our students can take a socially distanced mask break. Our recesses are 30 minutes so it is important that our students be comfortable while they are outside.

Attendance

Please remember to call our attendance line (513-891-2414) or email Betty Jung (jung.b@dpccsd.org), our attendance secretary, by 9AM if your student is going to be out.

This is especially important with the number of people that are either required to quarantine by the health department, or quarantining on their own accord. We need to be aware of these situations outside of school so that we can appropriately mark the attendance and provide guidance from the district if necessary.

Thanks for all your help!

School Nurse
