The Amity Weekly Minute: March 20, 2022

Amity Elementary

What's New?

From the Desk of Mr. Drouhard

Dear Amity Families,

I had the honor of attending our Games Club this week after school. Having a new face in the room, Ethan Meiers, one of our best chess players at Amity, sized me up for a match. I was a little nervous, as it had been a while since I last played chess. I quickly found out that I was playing a game, and Ethan was using strategy! He quickly dismantled my board, until I had a lonely King to show for my efforts. I had no choice but to throw in the towel! He was a superior opponent and had even better sportsmanship!

These types of after school activities are so great for our students. They provide ways for our students to connect across grade bands in a variety of ways. We are lucky to have these opportunities!

Take Care,

Josh

P.S. I will say I played a couple of students at connect four, and did finally win a match for the day!

Ohio State Testing

Students in grades 3-6 are gearing up for the state AIR assessment. It is very important that students are well rested and have a good breakfast, especially on testing days.

Please see the dates below for testing:

  • March 22nd (Tuesday) and March 23rd (Wednesday)- English Language Arts

  • April 19th (Tuesday) and April 20th (Wednesday)- 5th Grade Math

Amity 3rd Quarter Awards

Amity will be having their 3rd quarter awards on Thursday March 24th and Friday, March 25th. Grades 1st-6th will participate in a grade level ceremony during one of the two days. Parents will not be invited to these ceremonies, but will be provided with a picture of their child after receiving the award. Following the ceremony, teachers will be reaching out by phone, email, or a note to inform parents of why the awarded student received the honor.

Spring Break

Just a reminder that there will be no school from March 28th-April 1st due to Spring Break. We will not be running an Amity Minute on Sunday, March 27th. We will resume the Amity Minute on Sunday, April 3rd.

World Down Syndrome Day

World Down syndrome Day is Mar 21, 2022! Help us honor, spread awareness and be in support of individuals with Down syndrome this Monday, March 21 by allowing your child to wear mismatched socks! The world wide date of March 21st was chosen to observe individuals with Down syndrome due to the extra chromosomes a person with Down syndrome has (triplication of chromosome 21). Your child has been learning about Down syndrome and the significance of why we want to wear mismatched socks to spread awareness. We look forward to seeing our students “Rock Their Socks”.

In Case You Missed It

Amity STEAM and Fine Arts Night

Amity will be celebrating STEAM and Fine Arts night together on Thursday, April 7th. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. It is an educational philosophy that viewing and teaching these disciplines in combinations will lead to innovative thinkers and creators in life. The halls of Amity will be lined with student artwork for parents and students to immerse themselves in as they travel from classroom to classroom. Within our classrooms, we will have teachers leading our parents and students in science experiments and math games. Games and experiments will run from 6:00-7:00 p.m. that night. Our 5th grade will be performing at 7:00 p.m. in the gym to conclude the evening.

Amity Talent Show

The 2022 Amity Talent Show is on Thursday, March 24th at 5:30 pm in the Amity Gym. All are welcome to join us and see some amazing talent!

Kids Heart Challenge

Amity students and families,

I would like to say thank you for answering the call. At the start of February, all students in grades K-6 participated in the American Heart Association, Kids Heart Challenge, by continuing to learn of ways to keep their hearts healthy, spread awareness about heart disease and raise money for kids with special hearts. This year's fundraising goal was $5,000 and we were able to raise $5,768.73 for the American Heart Association.

Students who received donations were able to earn instant thank you gifts. If your child raised $15 or more, their larger thank you gifts will be received in about 4-weeks. Please stay tuned to find out who our top fundraisers were! Thank you to Mr. Satterfield for putting on this event!

Please Help Reduce Tardies To School

I recognize that as the school year rolls on, our ability to get our students up in the morning becomes harder. We need to renew our efforts in the morning to get our students up and out the door. School starts at 8:00, and our teachers are starting the educational process at that time daily. While it may not feel significant to be a couple minutes late, if done daily it will add up to a lot of educational minutes! Thank you for your help!

Champions Program At Amity

Champions offers before and after school programs at Amity Elementary to help working parents. Please see the attached flier for more information.

Recess During Cold Weather

With a return to colder temperatures, please remember to send your child to school with appropriate outdoor attire for recess. We will be going outside whenever the “feels like” temperature is 25 degrees or above. This gives our students time to burn some energy and allows for a time that our students can take a socially distanced mask break. Our recesses are 30 minutes so it is important that our students be comfortable while they are outside.

Attendance

Please remember to call our attendance line (513-891-2414) or email Betty Jung (jung.b@dpccsd.org), our attendance secretary, by 9AM if your student is going to be out.

This is especially important with the number of people that are either required to quarantine by the health department, or quarantining on their own accord. We need to be aware of these situations outside of school so that we can appropriately mark the attendance and provide guidance from the district if necessary.

Thanks for all your help!

School Nurse

Moving forward, all student COVID-19 cases occurring outside of school hours (evenings/weekends) should be submitted in one of the following ways:

  • Call the Deer Park COVID Hotline at (513) 936-7843

  • Fill our the Deer Park COVID Reporting Form linked below:
