Deer Park Jr/Sr High School Wildcat Weekly: April 3, 2022

Jr./Sr. High School

What's New?

A Message from the Administrators

Hello DPHS Families! Happy Sunday!

Welcome back from Spring Break. Mindy and I trust everyone was able to enjoy this much needed break with family and friends. In the meantime, we are ramping up for a productive April in our classrooms and are ramping up for a full slate of after-school enrichment and spring sports.

Our Sunday Wildcat Weekly will be your one stop shop for all of the information to keep you in the loop with everything taking place at DPHS. We are excited about the work we will do together as a team in April.

Together we'll provide every student the positive experience in and out of the classroom they deserve. Together we can! Mindy and I are here to serve you!

Here we go!

Classroom Highlight

The classroom is the "Hub" of Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School and this week I want to highlight the work taking place in Rhonda Smutz's Career Academy classroom. Preparing students for the workplace with real world experience is what Rhonda's classroom is all about.

Deer Park students are being challenged with hands-on Project Lead in cooperation with Great Oaks. Students learn how to operate CAD software to make multiview drawings and STL files that can be 3D printed. Students use VEX Robotics kits and other tools to create mechanisms such as working cranes, windmills, and pull toys. Students learn the basics of block computer programming to move a virtual robot in a game field.

Students also make things such as balsa wood airplanes, pop up cards and other models. They learn to model and display data on spreadsheets via charts, graphs, and tables, and make presentations to propose their solution to real and hypothetical problems. High School students do a reverse engineering lab where they actually take a device apart to see how it works on the inside. STEM labs are open to Junior High and High School students. Not only are they fun, but they build real world skills and look excellent on a high school transcript for students wishing to major in Science and Engineering fields.

Hats off to Rhonda and her students!! All Business every day in this classroom!

Great things are happening in our classrooms daily!

Smucz

Summer Learning Opportunities

Though summer break is a great time to reset and recharge, we also want to let our families know about a few learning opportunities that we will be offering:

SUMMER SCHOOL (CREDIT RECOVERY)

Our Summer School program is intended for credit recovery for any high school students who did not pass a core class (ELA, Math, Science, or Social Studies) during the 2021-2022 school year.

Because we do not have final grades yet, you may not necessarily know if your student would qualify.  While we hope to not have any students in this scenario, we also want to provide this opportunity to help our students stay on track to graduate!

The summer school program will have students placed on our Apex Online Learning platform, and students will work through topics that they have not yet mastered in order to earn a passing grade for the course.  There is a small cost ($50) for each course, and our Summer School monitor will help guide students throughout the program.  It is a 6 week program running from June 6th- July 18th (no school July 4th).

More information to come!

ACT BOOTCAMP

Each summer, we provide an opportunity for students to work with our teachers and an online platform to help prepare our students for success on the ACT.  This summer, we will have two sessions (students would only participate in one session).  Best of all, these sessions are FREE to students!

  • Session 1: June 20th - June 29th  (8:00am - 12:00pm)

  • Session 2: August 1st - August 9th (8:00am - 12:00pm)

These sessions are for incoming Juniors and Seniors.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please complete this form.
