Deer Park Jr/Sr High School Wildcat Weekly: April 24, 2022

Jr./Sr. High School

What's New?

A Message from the Administrators

Hello Deer Park High School Families! Happy Sunday!

We are closing out the month of April this week and Teaching and Learning will be our number one focus. Mindy and I have the unique privilege of observing the classroom instruction taking place daily at DPHS. I'm always impressed with how unique the vocation of teaching is and the hard work it takes to deliver instruction at the highest level daily. I was watching a favorite TV program at home and the program lasted a half hour. It's played once a week and the production crew were commenting on how many days it takes to produce that half hour show. I walked by one teacher's classroom this week, who teaches six periods a day and I reflected on the enormity of delivering the high caliber lessons she delivers every day and the time outside of the classroom she takes to prepare that lesson. There is no comparison!

We will be celebrating Teacher/Staff appreciation week very soon and I couldn't be more proud of our teaching staff and their passion for classroom instruction. It's not just the act of teaching a lesson which results in a student mastering the curriculum, it's the preparation needed prior to delivering that instruction which is equally important. Also, providing students the Clear Learning Goal at the beginning of each lesson is best practice. Below is a photograph of the preparation the students receive in Mrs. Winebar's classroom as they walk into her class every day.

In the meantime, Mindy and I can assure you our students will be engaged in Teaching and Learning right through their last day of school this year. We are here to serve you! Have a terrific Sunday evening with your family.

LIfe is good!

Classroom Highlight

Typically I highlight the teaching and learning I observe in one of our classrooms in this section of the Wildcat Weekly.  It's equally important to highlight  the real world learning experience our students are provided throughout the school year. The opportunity Mrs. Wilkerson provided her students is a prime example.

On Monday, April 18th, the Juniors in the AP American Government and Politics class and CP American Government Class were invited to attend the Student Government Night with the Deer Park City Council.  Students were assigned to a councilmember or Deer Park official.  Students passed several motions and had fun learning how to conduct a meeting using Robert's Rules of Order.  Junior Hazel Meza served as acting Mayor alongside Mayor Donnellon. This event is a yearly tradition that has been on hold due to the pandemic but we are happy that we were able to participate this year.

Summer Learning Opportunities

Though summer break is a great time to reset and recharge, we also want to let our families know about a few learning opportunities that we will be offering:

SUMMER SCHOOL (CREDIT RECOVERY)

Our Summer School program is intended for credit recovery for any high school students who did not pass a core class (ELA, Math, Science, or Social Studies) during the 2021-2022 school year.

Because we do not have final grades yet, you may not necessarily know if your student would qualify.  While we hope to not have any students in this scenario, we also want to provide this opportunity to help our students stay on track to graduate!

The summer school program will have students placed on our Apex Online Learning platform, and students will work through topics that they have not yet mastered in order to earn a passing grade for the course.  There is a small cost ($50) for each course, and our Summer School monitor will help guide students throughout the program.  It is a 6 week program running from June 6th- July 18th (no school July 4th).

More information to come!

ACT BOOTCAMP

Each summer, we provide an opportunity for students to work with our teachers and an online platform to help prepare our students for success on the ACT.  This summer, we will have two sessions (students would only participate in one session).  Best of all, these sessions are FREE to students!

  • Session 1: June 20th - June 29th  (8:00am - 12:00pm)

  • Session 2: August 1st - August 9th (8:00am - 12:00pm)

These sessions are for incoming Juniors and Seniors.  If you are interested in this opportunity, please complete this form.
