Jr./Sr. High School

What's New?

A Message from the Principal

Hello Deer Park Families! Happy Sunday!

It is hard to believe we are already finishing our second week of school. I am learning that we have some outstanding athletes and performers. I was so impressed with our band and color guard last Saturday night. It was their first performance of the year and the storms rolled in and they had to cut out three minutes of time to perform after waiting almost two hours for the game to even start. Not only did they pull that off, they were outstanding!!

Big Shoutout to our men and womens soccer teams and coaches. The boys and the girls teams are both 3-1!

Lauren Heglin Countdown: Lauren Heglin is now only 6 goals from breaking the all-time scoring record in soccer! Join us for the count down over the next few weeks until she breaks it!

Classroom Spotlight

Who says you can’t get students excited about writing? This week in ELA 9, Ms. Hackney’s classes have been focusing on how the connotation (or emotional meaning) behind the words an author chooses impacts the tone of a text. After a brief mini-lesson to review the concepts, she and her student teacher, Mr. Ball issued a challenge; the students had two minutes to write the scariest story they could think of. They started class the next day by having the students analyze the best story from each bell and identify the words with connotations that made the story scary. The students then selected the winners!!

These activities hit the following standards:

  • Day 1 Exit Ticket Challenge:

    • W.9-10.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.

    • W. 9-10.10 Write routinely over extended time frames  and shorter time frames for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences

    • W. 9-10.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

  • Day 2 Bellringer:

    • RL.9-10.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning, mood, and tone

The PSAT will take place at the high school on Wednesday, October 12th.

Coffee with The Administrators

We want to know what you think and what your questions are. Starting in September we will have one night a month where you can meet with us and ask questions or learn more about the different things going on at the Jr./Sr. High School. Sometimes we will bring in experts on specific topics and sometimes it will be more question and answer. We will let you know when our September night will be and hope to see you there.

Bike Racks Needed

We are noticing a lot of students riding their bikes to school, which is great. But we are in need of two more bike racks so that all kids can safely lock their bikes during the school day. If anyone is interested in donating, please email me at vandermeer.j@dpccsd.org.
