A Message from the Principal
Hello Deer Park Families! Happy Sunday!
I heard a quote at a conference this summer that I really liked. “Students can’t achieve what they can’t see.” One of the most important things we can do as educators is open our students' eyes to the possibilities for them once they graduate from high school. One way that we will accomplish this is through our X-BELL period. Part of what we will be doing during this bell is our College and Career Readiness (CCR).
The State of Ohio asks that each and every student have a success plan they develop and complete throughout their junior high and senior high school years; we help students complete this plan through our CCR activities at Deer Park (as well as the CCR conferences). Students will be able to earn credit as they put this plan together.
Here is how that will work:

For grades 9-12, CCR will constitute a quarter credit and will be a holistic Pass/Fail Class (100 or 59).

For grades 7-8, the focus is really about exploring one's interests and skills and then learning about various careers and jobs that might align with those traits.

All students in grades 7-12 will need to complete a certain amount of activities over the course of the quarter. These are not homework, but guided experiences that take place within the CCR framework and students will be provided ample time during Xbell to complete.

In some instances, a few of these activities may take place during English or Social Studies class (like “The Acceptance Essay” or "Attend a Scheduling Meeting").
CCR/Success Plan (including CCR Conference with student, parent/guardian, and teacher) is a required element to receive course credit for HS students.
Senior CCR conferences will be taking place on Thursday and Friday, September 29th and 30th. Grades 7-11 CCR Conference will occur Thursday and Friday, March 2nd and 3rd. While the district will also send out a link to schedule a conference, CCR teachers invite you to reach out via email if you would like to schedule an appointment at a different date or time (we are happy to conduct these via google-meet, or in-person).
We value the time we have with our students and the opportunity to help them prepare for the stages of life beyond high school; to open their eyes to the possibilities. If you have any questions or concerns prior to the conference, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s CCR/x-bell teacher.

Classroom Spotlight
Mr. Moore's 9th grade world history classes are working on how to read and analyze different types of sources in a historical context throughout the school year. This relates to Modern World History content standard 1.1 that states, "The use of primary and secondary sources of information includes an examination of the credibility of each source."
During a special lesson related to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, students had an opportunity to read and analyze various primary sources from September of 2001. Students picked a source (mostly newspaper and magazines) and did a sourcing exercises where students named the type of source, dated the source and described the author of the source. Then students read the articles and explained what that particular article told them about the September 11th attack. For example, a student who read an article from the sports section would discuss how the September 11th attacks shut down sporting events for several days and brought about major security concerns for future events. Students then shared their findings with their classmates and Mr. Moore discussed his specific experiences during this time period and large-scale impacts of these attacks. Students then wrote about why these events are significant in world history and how the sources of information they read about can influence their knowledge of an historical event like the 9/11 attacks.
To end the lesson, Mr. Moore discussed ways in which information spread during the 9/11 attacks and then connected that back to how the ideas of the Enlightenment spread such as through word of mouth in French salons and through weekly newspapers in the American colonies. The spread of Enlightenment ideas relates to Modern World History content standard 2.5 which states, "Enlightenment ideas regarding human nature and society challenged religious authority, absolute rue and mercantilism."

Need some academic help? Morning Intervention is available all year for students to come in for extra help from teachers on Thursdays at 7:35am. Students also have a daily “extra help” bell during the day to meet with their teachers.
